High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Bass Hill Public School, we recognise that high potential exists across different domains. HPGE is embedded in our everyday teaching and learning as we work to meet the individual needs of every student.
· Teachers regularly use diagnostic assessments, observations, work samples and student self-assessments to identify strengths and areas for improvement across all domains. This timely data informs lesson planning and differentiation to ensure continuous growth and engagement.
· Teachers communicate high expectations by designing learning tasks that foster higher-order thinking, creativity and problem solving.
· Classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage curiosity, risk-taking and perseverance.
· Learning activities are designed with varying levels of complexity, allowing students to work individually, in pairs or in flexible groups based on interests or abilities, ensuring appropriate challenge, collaboration, leadership and motivation.
· Teachers regularly engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including those identified as high potential or gifted. Teachers share best practice to strengthen the quality of instruction for the benefit of all learners.
Opportunities to participate in statewide programs extend and enrich the potential of our students.

Year 5 student, Nhicolette’s entry in the ‘Dymocks Children’s Charities’ Design Competition saw her awarded 1st place. The judges thought her artwork captured the calming, peaceful adventure that reading can be. Nhicolette received a book package worth $300.
Our high potential spellers entered The Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee. Year 4 student, Sabreen, made it through the first round to the top 200.
Nada demonstrated her talent in touch football, when she was selected as part of the Bankstown Zone team to play at the SSW carnival. A huge achievement, as she is only in Year 4!
